LCVP or Higgins boat

Usually built of plywood with a shallow draft, the Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP or Higgins boat) was used extensively in beach landings in World War II. Based on a design for boats operating in swamps and marshes, over 20,000 were built. A platoon of 36 men could be carried at 9 knots and personnel entered the boat via a cargo net hung from the side of their troop ship and they exited via the bow ramp.
