COBI-4821 - HMS Belfast - Light Cruiser - WWII Building Block

HMS Belfast is a city-class light cruiser built for the Royal Navy. Construction of Belfast, the first Royal Navy ship to be named after the capital of Northern Ireland and one of ten city-class cruisers, began in December 1936.

Launched on St Patrick's Day in 1938 and ordered in early August 1939. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, Belfast was originally part of the British naval blockade of Germany. In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and, despite fears that it would be scrapped, spent more than two years in extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armor. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union in 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of the Northern Cape and helped destroy the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944, Belfast participated in Operation Overlord, which supported the landings in Normandy. Belfast saw further hostilities in 1950-52 during the Korean War and underwent extensive modernization between 1956 and 1959. A number of additional foreign missions followed before joining the reserve in 1963.

She is now permanently moored as a museum ship on the Thames in London and is operated by the Imperial War Museum.
