F-14 Tomcat is an American aircraft carrier-based all-weather fighter / attack aircraft that served in the US Navy between 1974 and 2006. It is still used in the Iranian Air Force. The aircraft type was designed to replace the F-4 Phantom II and was manufactured by Grumman. In the 1986 film Top Gun, Tom Cruise's character Maverick is seen flying such a fighter jet. Perhaps among the most famous scene in film history must be when Maverick lies upside down above a MiG-28 (F-5E / F-5F) and gives the finger.
