ULFBERHT Viking Sword

Before the Ulfberht swords, most European swords were of the patterned weld. Soft iron bars were welded together with strips of steel, forged into a blade shape, then a steel edge was welded onto the sword.

The Ulfberht sword was a great step forward in both technology and design. It was made not from strips but from good carbon steel blades with enough carbon content to produce excellent swords. The design of the sword was also an improvement. The blade tapered more sharply to the top than previous blades. This put the balance of the sword closer to the hand and made these swords faster on both strike and recovery than previous swords.

The etchings on both sides of the blade are an exact copy of the original so the reproduction is identical on this sword. The sword is made of high carbon steel and is beautifully balanced in its design. The handle is made of wood covered with leather.

The heavy crossguard is made of steel and the pommel shape is of brazil nut which was quite popular at the time, both with Vikings and the rest of Europe.
