Lockheed P-38 Lightning
Lockheed P-38 Lightning is a heavy American fighter used during World War II.
P-38 (XP-38) was designed in 1937 and tested two years later, but was not put into combat until 1942. The model then applied (P-38F) was largely used in North Africa, but would later receive several assignments over Germany (then with new engines; F-15 Allison with compressor). The P-38 was also used extensively in the Pacific Ocean against Japan.
The P-38 was a large fighter aircraft that had a wingspan of 15.85 meters, a length of 11.53 meters and a height of three meters. An advantage of the P-38 was that the aircraft had nose wheels, which made it easier to land. In addition, the plane had an unusual design with, among other things, double tail booms and side rudders. The maximum speed was 636 km / h but the maximum speed during diving could exceed 800 km / h.
One problem the P-38 had was its compressibility; when diving at high speed, the plane could not be straightened. The only way for the pilot to solve this was by slowing down the plane's speed and hoping that the distance to the ground was long enough. In this way, it would then be possible to straighten the plane before it hit the ground. When the plane came in compressibility, it was considered dangerous for the pilot to jump out, because it was thought that he would collide with the rudder.
