The USS Enterprise (CV-6), commonly referred to as the "Big E", was the sixth aircraft carrier in the United States Navy and the seventh vessel in the fleet to carry that name. She was launched in 1936 as one of the Yorktown-class vessels and is one of only three American aircraft carriers in service before World War II that survived the war (the others being Saratoga and Ranger).
She participated in more major battles in the war against Japan than any other American ship. These battles include the Battle of the Midway, the Battle of the East Solomon Islands, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, several other air-sea battles during the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of the Bay of Leyte, as well as the "Doolittler" to Tokyo. On three separate occasions during the Pacific War, the Japanese announced that she had been reduced to battle.
Enterprise received a total of 20 battle stars, most of all US warships during World War II. Some have classified her as the most honored and revered ship in the history of the US Navy, with competition perhaps only by the 18th century frigate USS Constitution.
