The basket-hardened sword rose in popularity during the 16th century and its basic design is still used by many parade swords of armed forces throughout the world. This particular cut and thrust type of design really began to take off during the English Civil War and over the next century many variations of regional styles were found, particularly in northern England and Scotland.
