Sturmpanzer II - WW2 assault gun

The German 15 cm self-propelled gun sIG 33B Selbstfahrlafette was commonly called Sturmpanzer II Bison. During the French campaign, self-propelled guns on the PzKpfw I chassis proved to be very effective. However, they were too tall and overloaded the chassis.

The response to the detected defects was to become a new self-propelled gun built on a modified chassis of the PzKpfw II tank. The original fuselage was extended by 60 cm, widened by 32 cm, the engine was installed crosswise, one road wheel was added and a heavy 15 cm sIG 33 infantry gun caliber 150 mm was installed. Despite numerous modifications, the SPG did not live up to expectations. It was still too tight for the crew and the engine was overheating. Modifications to the chassis meant that it was impossible to build new self-propelled guns based on withdrawn from the main war operations of PzKpfw II tanks. As part of the trial series, only 12 were produced.

These cannons were then incorporated into two independent motorized infantry companies 707 and 708 included in Afrika Korps. In Africa, they participated in hostilities from February to December 1942. The British probably acquired six copies, some of which were used by Egypt during the Israeli-Arab war.
